FAQs
Can I apply with an associate's degree?
Unfortunately, one of the requirements of an E-2 (English teacher) visa in a 4-year bachelor's degree from an accredited university. Anything less than that will not be accepted.
Do I need a degree in Education or English?
No, your university degree can be in any subject, as long as it is a 4-year bachelor's degree.
Do I need a TEFL or TESOL certificate?
No, you do not need either of those to apply.
How does the airfare cost assistance work?
You will purchase your flight ticket to Korea and keep the receipt to submit to the school. The total amount of money the school will refund is up to a maximum of one million Korean won. If your ticket cost less than one million, you will only be refunded the amount of the ticket. Most schools will refund you after your first month of work, however some schools may refund you after you successfully complete your one-year contract. The refund terms will be specified in your teaching contract. Please make sure to review them carefully.
Can I get my paycheck deposited into my account in my native country?
No, the school will open an account for you in Korea and deposit your paycheck into that account. From there it is your responsibility to transfer your money to any other foreign bank of your choosing.
Can I bring my pet?
Dogs and cats are generally accepted as long as the dogs are not very large, but the school does have a right to say no. You will need to let the school know ahead of time that you would like to bring a pet as it may affect the housing situation. You will also be in charge of all the expenses and paperwork involved with the international transportation of your pet. Will I have health insurance?
Yes. Health care in South Korea is government subsidized and therefore very affordable and accessible to all. Once you have arrived, the school will enroll you in the health insurance program. The school will cover half of the cost, and the other half will be deducted automatically from your paycheck along with your taxes and other governmental deductions.
Do I need to speak Korean?
No, you do not need to know any Korean at all. Korea is a very English friendly country with many signs in English. I recommend you learn to read Korean. It is a phonetic alphabet that allows you to sound out words and is easy to learn. If you do speak Korean, so not mention it during the interview as schools prefer that the teachers not know Korean.
Can I choose which region I will go to in Korea?
Yes! Feel free to let me know where you want to go in Korea. Not only that, but feel free to bring a qualifying friend or family member with you. You can request to either be placed at the same school, or if there is limited availability, schools that are near each other.
What grades and hours will I teach?
You will not be teaching in a public school. You will be teaching at an academy or "hagwon". Most academies have kindergarten classes all morning with the afternoons having mostly classes of elementary students and occasionally classes of middle and high school students. Most academies are usually open from roughly 9am to around 6pm, but your hours and classes may vary and will depend on the school that you choose to work at.
How much do you charge for your services?
